Selected Profiles of Massachusetts Judges and Lawyers

Honorable
Margaret A. Burnham
(born 1944)

The first African American woman to serve in the Massachusetts judiciary, Judge Burnham was appointed Associate Justice of the Boston Municipal Court in 1977 by Governor Michael Dukakis. In 1982, she resigned from the judiciary to return to the practice of law. She has also served as civil rights attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She is currently Professor of Law at Northeastern University Law School.
