Honorable David S. Nelson (19331999) Judge Nelson was appointed Associate Justice of the Superior Court in 1973 by Governor Francis Sargent, after a distinguished career in the private practice of law and as Chief of the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General of Massachusetts. He went on to become the first African American appointed to the Federal judiciary in Massachusetts. In 1979, he was appointed Judge of the United States District Court for Massachusetts by President Jimmy Carter, becoming the first African American appointed to the Federal judiciary in Massachusetts.
