Diary
entries, June 14–17, 1775. Private Nathaniel
Ober, a shoemaker from Wenham, Massachusetts, marched
to the Lexington Alarm on April 19, 1775. He served in Colonel
John Mansfield's Massachusetts Regiment and kept a diary of
his experiences from May 15–September 15, 1775.
Although
Ober did not fight at Bunker Hill, he was keenly aware of
the enormous cost to the British. In his entry for June 17,
he wrote "So grait was the Fall of our Enemys. How are the
mighty Falen."
The Ober
diary passed down through the Ober family for more than two
centuries. One of Private Oberšs descendents gave it to the
Massachusetts Historical Society in 1999.
