This excerpt from John Rowe's diary expresses the sense of panic felt by colonial merchants in the wake of the passing of the Sugar Act the previous spring. Whereas the Molasses Act of 1733 was put in place as a way to regulate trade to the advantage of the British, the Sugar Act is the first tax specifically designed to raise revenue for the British government, and its effect is immediate and disturbing.
