An 1883 graduate of Boston University School of Law, Butler Wilson started his legal career as the office apprentice of Judge George L. Ruffin and ended it as Master in Chancery. He was a co-founder of the Boston branch of the NAACP. In addition, he represented a number of black defendants, in the 1920s and 1930s, in extradition proceedings against Southern states where the conditions for African Americans were inhumane.
