Selected Profiles of Massachusetts Judges and Lawyers

stevensAttorney
Robert Morris Stevens

Robert Morris Stevens was the first African American attorney to practice in western Massachusetts where he had an office in Pittsfield. In the 1930s he represented the accused in a highly-publicized interracial murder trial. It is perhaps significant that his parents appear to have named him after the first outstanding black attorney in Massachusetts, Robert Morris.
