Edward W. Brooke
A 1948 graduate of Boston University Law School where he was a member of the Law Review, Brooke was unable to find employment with a major law firm, and as a result, began his career, like many black lawyers at the time, as a single practitioner in Roxbury. In 1962, he was elected Attorney General of Massachusetts, becoming the first African American to hold the office in the United States. In 1966, he was elected to the United States Senate from Massachusetts, becoming the first African American elected to that body since Reconstruction.
