Attorney Edward W. Brooke A 1948 graduate of Boston University Law School where he was a member of the Law Review, Brooke was unable to find employment with a major law firm, and as a result, began his career, like many black lawyers at the time, as a single practitioner in Roxbury. In 1962, he was elected Attorney General of Massachusetts, becoming the first African American to hold the office in the United States.
