Thomas Jefferson was not just the author of the Declaration of Independence and the third President, but he was also an influential architect in the early republic. Although he is best known today for the design of his own house, Monticello, Jefferson was very important as a champion for and scholar of neoclassical design. His plans for the Virginia State Capital and the University of Virginia helped define how Americans thought of public spaces for the following century.
