This declaration was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and rewritten by John Dickinson. In it the 13 colonial representatives resolve that while a war of independence can still be avoided, colonial Americans would sooner die than continue to live in slavery. It was approved by Congress on 6 July, 1775.
