In this letter to Col. David Wooster of New Haven, Connecticut, Phillis Wheatley describes her visit to England, her manumission subsequently granted by John Wheatley, and sales of her book, Poems on Various Subjects. Col. Wooster, the customs inspector in New Haven, was appointed major-general in April 1775, and died in battle in 1777. Phillis wrote an elegy on his death in 1778, and sent it to Wooster's widow in New Haven. (See the online presentation of the letter Wheatley sent to Mrs. Wooster)
