As the Battle of Bunker Hill came to a bloody close, Abigail Adams mourned the death of family friend Dr. Joseph Warren and looked ahead to the Revolution’s next phase. To her husband, then in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, she wrote, "The Day, perhaps the decisive Day is come on which the fate of America depends." With a “bursting heart,” she lamented the mounting losses and prayed that providence would protect Americans as war continued to rage.
