Abigail Adams wore this dimity pocket, a woven textile that has a ribbed or striped structure, in the late 18th or early 19th century. An accompanying note by her granddaughter Elizabeth Coombs Adams reads, “All old ladies wore these under pockets & carried their keys in them.” The pocket would have been tied above Abigail’s petticoat and under her skirt.
