In this letter, Ellen "Nellie" Custis Lewis addresses her long-time acquaintance Harrison Gray Otis regarding William Lloyd Garrison. Lewis calls Garrison a "wretch" and opines that his antislavery rhetoric, spread in the pages of The Liberator, is responsible for "calamity" taking place in Virginia. Ellen Custis Lewis was the granddaughter of Martha Washington and the adopted daughter of George Washington.
