This miniature portrait of Elizabeth Freeman ("Mumbet") was painted by Susan Anne Livingston Ridley Sedgwick in 1811. The painting shows Freeman wearing a typical Federalist period dress as well as a necklace of gold beads that were later made into a bracelet. In 1781 Elizabeth Freeman, (1744?-1829) was one of the two plaintiffs who successfully sued for their freedom in an early pivotal case argued before the Massachusetts courts.
