Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution
Massachusetts
Soldiers and Sailors of the American Revolution was compiled from
the official records by the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
This source lists the men (and at least one woman listed under an assumed
name) who served in the American Revolution from Massachusetts. The twenty-seven
volumes of names are listed in alphabetical order. Therefore, in order
to locate the names of all of the individuals who served at the Battle
of Bunker Hill, you would have to systematically go through twenty-seven
volumes of listings.
Each
entry includes the hometown, occupation, age, rank, enlistment information
and service record of the soldier listed. It is the best source of information
for soldiers who served in the American Revolution, but still does not
provide conclusive answers to who did or didn't serve in the Battle of
Bunker Hill.
Research
Activity - Bunker Hill -- Gathering Biographical Information
Using the List
of Reference Sources in this guide, locate two biographical sketches
of each of the individuals from the List
of Documents in the online exhibit. You may want to begin by checking
the names of several individuals in the Abridged Biography and Genealogy
Master Index. Is there more biographical information about some
of the individuals than there are for others? Compare two different
sketches for one individual and explain how each is different or the
same.
